San Antonio Mission - Alamo Coffee Company

french press and bag of coffee

For the month of November, we wanted to focus on coffees with a distinct apple influence, now that pumpkin season has passed.

We grabbed a bag of the San Antonio Mission whole beans from Alamo Coffee Company in Lampasas, Texas. I ground the beans on a medium-coarse setting because I feel like my medium grind is a little too fine for a French press.

This coffee has a very satisfying bloom. Each brew in the press has been bubbling like crazy, which is a testament to the quality and freshness of the beans.

The Flavors

AlamoCoffee.com describes San Antonio Mission as a medium roast with notes of “crisp green apple acidity,...sweet almond toffee and rich chocolate.”

This brew is definitely a medium roast that balances perfectly between the smoky dark flavors and a more acidic and tart light roast. It starts out with a slightly acidic apple flavor, but each sip ends with a nutty, toffee flavor. There is a hint of dryness associated with the chocolate notes at the back of your tongue that is not overpowering, but instead wraps the entire blend together nicely.

The medium roast and balanced flavors of apple and toffee would allow this coffee to pair with many different flavors, from sweet to savory. We enjoyed it black but a splash of cream would add a smooth finish that compliments the roast flavors.

The Brewing

We brewed this using our French press. When brewed with 55 grams (~6 heaping tbsp) of medium-coarse grind beans, there was less of the apple notes and a stronger toffee finish. I also brewed this with approximately 45-50 grams of medium-coarse grounds, and the result offered a stronger apple flavor that was still satisfying and not overpowering. Both methods were highly enjoyable and tasted delicious.

If you are in South Texas, head over to Lampasas and check out Alamo Coffee Company and get some coffee for yourself.

Cheers,

Mrs. Brew
