Pumpkin Chai Coffee - Death Wish Coffee Review

With a history that is thousands of years old, chai started as a caffeine free healing medicine and has since grown a strong foothold in the coffee and tea worlds. And it grows stronger yet during the pumpkin season craze.

Chai is typically made with combinations of ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. These combinations are spicy and bring heat to the palate that can only be soothed by the creamy, earthy sweetness of pumpkin. Death Wish Coffee has managed to bring this union to life in their seasonal Pumpkin Chai Coffee blend.

These medium roast beans are made with a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom. Upon opening the bag, it smells strongly of pumpkin and spice. It has a slightly active bloom when made in our French press to our usual specs: 32 oz of 200F water, 50 g medium/fine grind. After brewing, you might expect that first sip to be overpowering, but the coffee shines through with the creaminess of the pumpkin and the sweetness of the spices mellowing to a balanced flavor. I loved getting the initial hit of coffee and then having the unique Death Wish flavors follow.

Pumpkin Chai Coffee will not overpower your senses, but will instead help wake them up and get you into the holiday spirit. This coffee pairs great with pumpkin cookies, but I am also really fond of how it pairs with jalapeno cheddar toast… maybe that seems strange, but give it a chance. Death Wish also had this coffee shipped to me immediately and I was glad to see it arrive on my porch fresh and flavorful.

Barista Tip: We added a splash (2 oz) of Volleman’s Pumpkin Spice milk (Texas based dairy) to our mugs and it further enhanced the pumpkin and soothed the spices. It was a good combination of flavors that sang of fall. When we brewed it as a cold brew, the spices held firm but the pumpkin was significantly subdued. We also added some Volleman’s to that and it helped harmonize all the pumpkin and spice flavors. A great brew for both hot and cold drinkers.

If you need a brew to kick off your pumpkin season that is full of spice, creamy flavors, and doesn’t lose the coffee flavor, Death Wish’s Pumpkin Chai Coffee is the best place to look. From a company that “live[s] to rebel against blah beans” and serves the World’s Strongest Coffee, not to mention someone who provides a certified USDA Organic product, you’ll know you are getting a product that is made with attention and care and tastes exceptional as a result. I am eager to try more of their coffees in the future as their Pumpkin Chai Coffee was our first experience with them.

Cheers!
