Bavarian Hazelnut - HEB Cafe Ole Review
Once a humble nut for the common man, the hazelnut has since transformed into one of the most popular nuts in the world. Labeled as a medium-bodied coffee with the “sweet rich taste of German hazelnuts,” we were eager to try the Bavarian Hazelnut from HEB’s Cafe Ole line up.
The blend comes in wholebean only, so the first thing we have to do is grind 50g to a medium-fine grind for our French press. Most people recommend a coarse grind for French press brewing, but we like a stronger cup of coffee, so we take it one click towards the finer side of grinding. (The best way to figure out your preferences is to experiment with your grinder.)
The beans themselves weren’t very oily or sticky with extra coating which is more conducive to a natural flavor and medium-bodied mouth feel. We brewed our fresh grounds with 200F water and steeped in the press for 4-5 minutes. It produces a moderately active bloom and immediately greets us with a strong hazelnut aroma. The sweet nuttiness has hints of caramel or toffee undertones. The sweet notes of caramel and hazelnut blend well in flavor and leave a slightly dry mouthfeel with the tiniest hint of a darker chocolate.
The Bavarian Hazelnut is complex but easy to sip and enjoy. This roast reminds me of the elegance and beauty found in simpler times. I could imagine the families in Bavaria, both rich and poor, sitting down in their gorgeous countryside and sipping on a cup of this deliciously flavored coffee.
If you want to feel transported to Bavaria and enjoy anything with hazelnuts, grab a bag of Bavarian Hazelnut from HEB!
Cheers,
