Lafitte’s Gold - Raven’s Wing Coffee Review

We’ve had Raven’s Wing Coffee out of the Piney Woods of East Texas on our radar for a while and were finally able to take a plunge and try some of their coffee – starting with Lafitte’s Gold.

This special roast is named after Jean Lafitte, a pirate from Galveston, TX, who “helped Andrew Jackson defend New Orleans from the British in the War of 1812 and became a spy for the Spanish in the Mexican War of Independence…”

We are drawn in not just by the lure of pirate lore, but by the coconut and vanilla flavors. Right away we notice a moderately active bloom, especially active when the water is at 202℉ compared to our usual 200℉. It produces an aroma reminiscent of oak barrels with mild coconut. It smells slightly acidic, leading me to believe this is a medium-to-light roast.

Once fully brewed, Lafitte’s Gold is smooth, medium-bodied, with a sweetly balanced coconut and vanilla. Two of my favorite flavors, coconut and vanilla are easy to identify but work in tandem rather than trying to overpower the other. This union results in a pleasant sipper that is slightly creamy from the coconut and lightly coats the palate.

Barista Note: We used this to make an at-home horchata latte and the result was amazing! The coconut and vanilla paired beautifully with the strong cinnamon flavors of the horchata milk and resulted in a sweet, flavorful pick-me-up.

If I could wrangle the feeling of a sunrise on the shoreline, add a dash of coconut and a splash of vanilla, and pour it into a mug of coffee, Lafitte’s Gold would be the result.

Cheers,

Mrs. Brew
