Salty Siren Decaf - Bones Coffee Review

Lately, my quest for good and flavorful decaf coffee has been… less than fruitful. I’ve tasted several decaf coffees that are grassy, overly acidic, or completely void of flavor. And for those looking to cut back on caffeine for Sober October, or those who enjoy decaf coffee on a daily basis, the last thing we want to do is drink boring and bland coffee.

That is where Salty Siren Decaf from Bones Coffee comes in. We’ve ordered several different flavored coffees from Bones Coffee in the past few years, and have always been pleasantly surprised by the depth of flavor and the quality and freshness of the beans. As a flavored coffee company, they have managed to extract some unique flavors while not losing sight of the bean itself.

I love the fully caffeinated version of Bones Coffee’s Salty Siren, and when I saw that they made a decaf version, I was eager to get my hands on it in the hopes that the deliciously rich flavors would still sing true.

And it does!

When we brew this to our usual specs – 50g medium-fine grind, 200F water, steep for 4-5 minutes in the French press – we are first blown away by the active bloom. The grounds bubbled and swelled with the amount of carbon dioxide being released. All those beautiful bubbles extract the unique flavors and roasting qualities and begin the steeping process. This bloom proves once again the quality and freshness of Bones’s coffee beans and their commitment to small-batch roasting.

This blend is designed to taste like a Sea-Salted Caramel Mocha and I can proudly say that it lives up to that description. Caramel is the most pronounced from the aroma to the flavor. Salty Siren’s mocha flavor lingers toward the back of the palate and creates a pleasantly dry mouthfeel. The sea salt is well blended into the caramel and enhances the entire flavor profile without adding any acidity.

If you are looking to cut back on caffeine but are not willing to give up flavor in the process, check out Salty Siren Decaf from Bones Coffee. And when you are ready for that full caffeine symphony of flavors, head back and order the fully-caffeinated version. Each order from Bones Coffee is small batch roasted, delivered fresh, and packed with flavors that are sure to please.

I’ll definitely order this one again (and its caffeinated friend)!

Cheers,

Mrs. Brew
