Peet’s 60 Year Anniversary Blend - Review
Attention all coffee drinkers! Peet’s Coffee is celebrating 60 years of business! In 1966, Peet’s Coffee opened their doors and has been producing some of the best coffee since. In honor of that legacy, they roasted (for a limited time) their 60 year Anniversary Blend. We were lucky enough to get a bag of beans, so let’s see how it brews! With the promise of boysenberry, dark chocolate, and turbinado sugar, we are expecting quite a coffee.
We brewed Anniversary Blend in our French press to our usual specs after freshly grinding the beans to a medium-fine grind: 37 g grounds, 24 oz of 202℉ water, steep ~4 minutes. The beans were dark in color with a gentle oily sheen, a perfect indication of a well-roasted dark roast. (As beans are roasted, the heat extracts the oils to the surface, resulting in a shiny coating. Longer, hotter roasts, aka Dark Roasts and French Roasts, result in shinier, oilier beans.) It produces an active bloom and a rich aroma of dark chocolate with a tinge of smoke and gentle berry notes woven throughout.
Once poured and sipped, the dark chocolate is forward and rich with a slight bitterness, as we expect from good dark chocolate. The chocolate is followed by the boysenberry – similar to a blackberry, but a touch sweeter – which provides a brightness to balance the rich, earthy flavors and lingers on the palate to draw you back for more. The turbinado sugar is less noticeable and is instead wound closely with the sweet berry.
This is a very comforting cup of coffee. It is delightful to drink, dark and full bodied, and a perfect testament to the Peet’s 60 year legacy. Blending beans from Colombia and Rwanda achieved the perfect balance of earthy, smoky flavors (Colombia) and the sweet, juicy finish (Rwanda). I am so happy we got a bag of this coffee. If they ever release it again, don’t hesitate to order a bag! You’ll be glad you did.
Cheers,
Mrs. Brew
Even though this is sold out, there are other great Peet’s Coffees to try! Our favorite is the French Roast!
