Notte - Medici Roasting Review

One of my favorite fall desserts is a warm slice of homemade apple pie with a dollop of vanilla ice cream – Apple pie a la mode. To me, the warm spiced apples and the cool vanilla ice cream (not to mention the buttery flaky crust) are the perfect representation of the fall season. It is the dessert that reminds me of family and love, comfort and passion.

We found Medici Roasting’s Notte house blend while shopping at Central Market in San Antonio. Medici Roasting is a family owned roastery in Austin, Texas, so we were excited to try another local coffee, but we were especially excited about the flavor profile of Notte: Apple Pie, Toasted Marshmallow, and Cocoa.

This dark roast produces a slow to moderate bloom when brewed in our French press. We immediately notice a strong apple aroma that is mildly acidic. Once fully brewed, the apple flavor is the most prominent. I noticed a hint of spice – which I think is reminiscent of nutmeg – followed by creaminess of the toasted marshmallow. The cocoa flavor is lost on my palate, only alluded to in the slightly dry finish at the end.

I am happy this was roasted as a dark roast. Had it been a light roast or even a medium roast, the apples would have way overpowered the coffee and produced a very acidic blend. As it is, the apples are still bright and strong, but the coffee doesn’t sour in the stomach like other light roast or acidic coffees can.

This is a perfect coffee for the fall season, and especially for November. As Thanksgiving approaches and cool weather descends, we all want a little more warmth in our mugs. If you love apple pie and are looking for a reprieve from the pumpkin craze, give Medici’s Notte a go. It is fruity and spicy, made with care, and a perfect companion of fall.

Cheers,

Mrs. Brew
