Dancing Goat - Texas Joe Coffee Co. Review

When winter rolls around, we love to find ourselves cuddled up inside with a hot cup of dark coffee in hand. That dark coffee should have dense, rich flavor, and warm us from the inside out.

We found such a coffee in Dancing Goat from Texas Joe Coffee Company, roasted in Houston, Texas. At first, we noticed a dark and down-to-earth aroma. And while lots of coffees claim to be dark, roasted, and smoky, too many are not, so let’s crack on and see how this brews up.

We brewed Dancing Goat to our usual French press specs: 50g, 32 oz of 200℉ water, steep 3-5 minutes. This brew has a darker aroma once brewed, highlighting more of the smoky notes. The flavor is a mix of nostalgia, with smoky, tobacco-esque flavors that are blended with a dark chocolate and earthy cherry. It has a medium bodied mouthfeel and a soft finish. The dark flavors of this coffee are similar to a French roast which is double roasted and smoky. The darker roast quality also means less acidity. After drinking some lighter, more fruity flavored coffee, the low acidity of the dark roast is a nice reprieve for the palate as we move closer to winter.

Barista Notes: The best way to test a new coffee is by brewing it in different styles. So in addition to our French press, we turned Dancing Goat into a cold brew. Wow! One of the best cold brews I’ve ever tasted – it is exactly what I want in a black cold brew. There is no noticeable acidity and it rests pleasantly in the stomach. I often find cold brews to be too bright in flavor, highlighting all the sharp bright flavors, but this one was even more balanced with the smokey notes and touch of dark chocolate bitterness. No milk necessary.

But it gets better. We also brewed Dancing Goat in a moka pot for at-home lattes. We added 1 Tbsp of Tobani chocolate sauce and 1 tsp salted caramel syrup, and 1 cup of steamed milk. Dancing Goat makes an excellent base for the sweeteners when making at-home lattes. The grounded smoke, chocolate, and even the hint of cherry flavors were perfectly balanced and ready to take on more sweeteners and flavorings.

Easy drinker and adaptable to any brewing style, Dancing Goat is one we can easily enjoy all winter long. An all around great bag of coffee.

Grab a bag and brew on!

Cheers,

Mrs. Brew
