Midnight Blue Decaf - Katz Coffee Review
As the moon rises over the bayous of Houston, Midnight Blue Decaf emerges to keep the weary traveler and late hour workers afloat.
Although not full of caffeine, Midnight Blue is not lacking flavor! We brewed it to our usual specs: 50g with ~32 oz water @ 200 F. This dark roast has an active bloom with an earthy aroma and a hint of citrus at the end. Once fully brewed, Mr. Brew and I were pleased with the complex depth of flavors it offered.
Katz notes that it contains dark chocolate, tobacco, orange citrus, and molasses flavors. I strongly noted the earthy tobacco – not in an off putting way for those who might be leery – and the citrus. I was sure that the citrus addition was lemon before seeing that Katz described it as orange. Either way, the addition of citrus to the earthy tobacco helped to brighten the overall flavor and perception of this coffee. I personally didn’t notice any of the molasses but I did notice the dry mouth feel that is reminiscent of chocolate.
Midnight Blue Decaf was great from our French press. Katz recommends brewing it in a French press, Auto Drip, or as a Cold Brew. Each of these methods would help to extract all the flavors present in the beans without pulling the acidity of the coffee (just the acidic brightness of the citrus).
I could drink this one regularly; especially during winter months as the dark roasts appeal more to me when it is colder outside because of their rustic and smoky depth. If you are a fan of coffees that have a lot of complex flavors, a bright finish, and dark undertones, give this one a try. It is yet another example of a decaf coffee that leaves me feeling satisfied without the caffeine high.
Grab a bag of Katz Midnight Blue Decaf and taste the blend of tobacco earthiness and orange citrus.
Cheers,
Mrs. Brew
