Kenya AA - Angler’s Coffee Review

The first roaster we came across for our exploration of Kenya AA Single Origin coffee comes to us from Washington state – Angler’s Coffee. After fishing through their website, it was clear that they take great pride in producing high-quality coffee that gives back and takes care of the natural environment so that it can continue to be enjoyed for years to come.

Angler’s Coffee describes their Kenya AA as “rich, deep, [and] delicious” and freshly roasts each order in small batches to deliver the freshest coffee. Our bag was roasted only two days before it arrived on our doorstep. That freshness was evident from the first brew.

In our French press, with our usual ratios of 50g medium-fine grind and 200℉ water, the bloom was active from the first brew to the last. We immediately notice a strong cherry aroma that is balanced by a rich, medium-bodied coffee. Cherry comes through in flavor as well and is complemented by a light, honey sweetness and bright, acidic finish.

Barista Notes: This makes a great cup of French press coffee. Yet we couldn’t help but try and brew it in the Moka pot to compare the flavors. In the Moka pot, we brewed 30g with approximately 8 oz. of water (fill to just below the steam vent). This yielded between 4-6oz of dark, condensed coffee. When drunk straight black, it is definitely reminiscent of a straight espresso shot but the cherry flavor is very strong and far overpowers the coffee base. As an experiment, we added 1 tsp of chocolate syrup and then added milk (approximately equal parts, but add to your preferences). The fat in the milk helped cut through the acidity of the cherry and resulted in a really enjoyable at-home latte. You can easily heat up and froth the milk, or serve this over ice for a delicious summer iced latte. The chocolate, cherry, and bright lemony finish all balance out nicely with the addition of milk.

I am very pleased with the quality of Angler’s Coffee Kenya AA beans and know that I’ll be ordering from them again. They are committed to fly fishing, good coffee, and conservation of the natural world. With a mission such as theirs, it is hard not to support them. If you are interested in a versatile coffee that works black or as a latte, definitely check out Anglers’ Kenya AA. You will not regret it.

Cheers,

Mrs. Brew
