Highlander Grogg - Addison Coffee Roasters Review
Before I was big into coffee I tried a Highlander Grogg and found it repulsively sweet. However, as my palate has grown and I have really come to appreciate flavored coffee beans, I was eager to retry some Highlander Groggs and give them a fair chance. So when Mr. Brew and I came across Addison Coffee Roasters in Central Market San Antonio and saw their Highlander Grogg, I thought there was no time like the present to try this roast and see how it tastes.
Addison Coffee told us to expect notes of butterscotch, caramel, maple, and a hint of rum. Let’s see how it brewed.
When brewed to our usual specs in the French press (200F water, 50 g, 4-5 minute steep) it produces a fairly active bloom. We catch hints of a light cinnamon and strong toffee in the aroma. The toffee definitely carries over into flavor and is matched with a smooth nuttiness. I note hints of pecan and walnut that create a smooth mouthfeel. There is a bright lift at the end of the sip that has me going back for more.
Based on experiences, I find this a lighter Highlander Grogg and was expecting something darker and more robust. But this medium roast is pleasantly sweet and smooth, and is definitely something that can be enjoyed daily by black coffee drinkers.
Barista Tip: Add a splash of creamer or milk to enhance the smooth and nutty flavors we picked out in the Highlander Grogg and accent the toffee notes.
Cheers,
Mrs. Brew
