Dark Roast & Chicory - New Orleans Roast Review

We in the Brew household love a steaming cup of bitter chicory root balanced with a dark, smoky coffee. Seeing those two profiles come together in New Orleans Roast’s coffee, we knew we had to take it home for a brew.

Right away, there is no denying the strong chicory aroma. It is slightly bitter, almost acidic, and is followed by a hint of smoke. Although the aroma smells a touch acidic, that does not carry over into flavor.

In honor of the French traditions of New Orleans, we brewed Dark Roast & Chicory in the French press. It has a well balanced smokey bitterness that is a complement of both the dark roast coffee and the chicory root. The coffee is not overpowered by the chicory, which lends itself to a perfect pick-me-up. Don’t get me wrong, this is definitely a chicory based coffee, but we have tried some blends that taste like there is no coffee included.

Need a slightly less caffeinated option that doesn’t compromise on the smoky, dark qualities of coffee that you love? Dark Roast & Chicory coffee is a perfect option. Chicory root is naturally caffeine free, so when blended with coffee it can produce a (slightly) less caffeinated cup of coffee. When we feel a bit ill from all the caffeine we consume or drink too many acidic light roasts, we love turning to Chicory blends to get all the goodness out of our cup with none of the adverse side effects.

New Orleans Roast opened in 2008, just a few steps from the French Quarter in New Orleans. With a history steeped in coffee and chicory, and a location right on the Mississippi, they have big shoes to fill, which is why they meticulously use small batch roasting to ensure that every coffee bean that exits their facility is of the highest quality. We definitely taste the level of care in Dark Roast & Chicory and look forward to trying some of their other unique flavors.

Want a taste of New Orleans but not a fan of chicory? They have other unique flavors like Bananas Foster and Chocolate Beignet which might appease your southern sweet tooth.

Cheers,

Mrs. Brew
