Cinnamon Cacao - Via Bom Dia Review

South Texas is known for bold flavors. Two of our favorites come from across the border and have influenced so much of our cuisine and our palate – cinnamon and chocolate. This dynamic duo are common Mexican flavors that influence both savory and sweet dishes. Via Bom Dia brings these two to the forefront in their Cinnamon Cacao blend (with beans from Mexico!).

When brewed, the Via Bom Dia has a strong chocolate flavor (less minty than their Dirty Chai) and a sweetly spiced cinnamon. It is well balanced with a dry finish and is easily a weekly drinker. We love the balance of bold flavors, but we wanted to highlight the cinnamon and cacao even further by pairing it with another of our favorites. And that is where the Italian classic – the affogato – enters the scene.

Making an Affogato

An affogato is an Italian dessert consisting of a scoop of ice cream or gelato (traditionally vanilla flavored) with an espresso shot poured over the top. That description alone is enough to make my taste buds tingle with anticipation.

One of our favorite HEB Creamy Creations ice creams is the Mexican Hot Chocolate. Once we tried the Cinnamon Cacao from Via Bom Dia, we knew we had to try them together, so we did!

To make Cinnamon Cacao for the affogato, we brewed 6 oz of coffee in the moka pot (so we each had approximately 3 oz of coffee). Then we poured it over a deliciously creamy scoop of the Mexican Hot Chocolate ice cream.

We wanted to taste even more cinnamon and chocolate from the pairing and wowza, it didn’t disappoint. The cinnamon vein that runs through the ice cream gives a pleasant texture to the dessert. The coffee is strong (as all good espresso should be) and offers a nice bitter earthiness to complement the sweet and strong chocolate. This is one dessert we will definitely be looking forward to making again.

Whether brewed alone or poured over ice cream, Via Bom Dia’s Cinnamon Cacao coffee has great cinnamon and chocolate flavors that will please both the palates of those who want their coffee dark and those who enjoy the sweeter notes of medium roasted bliss.

Try out a bag of the Cinnamon Cacao for yourself and then pour it over a scoop of ice cream. (It’s worth the calories!) Even if you can’t find the HEB Mexican Hot Chocolate ice cream, any chocolate or vanilla flavor will do.

Cheers,

Mrs. Brew
