Christmas Blend - Fire Dept. Coffee
At the start of December, Mr. Brew asked me what constituted the flavors of “Christmas.” I began prattling off a list of flavors that reminded me of the holiday season: peppermint, caramel, spices like cinnamon and nutmeg, mocha.
I realized as I was listing the flavors of Christmas that I was really listing flavors that I enjoy all year (minus the peppermint – that is a December only coffee flavoring). And yet, there is something special about Christmas blend coffees that is enjoyable only during the month of December.
One such coffee with Christmas flavors is Fire Department Coffee’s Christmas Blend. The company describes this coffee as “rich, smooth” and flavored with notes of “sweet spices and winter berry.”
The strongest aroma and flavor that we note is smoke. Right from the bag, to the bloom, to the mug, I strongly smell a smokey aroma. The smoke carries into the flavor, but is subdued. The winter berry is noticeable - reminding me of an earthy, slightly sweet, cherry. The spices are mild and appear at the back of the mouth which compliments the forward berry and smoky flavors.
This medium roast coffee is mildly acidic - being gentle on the stomach and a compliment to savory or sweet dishes. My favorite thing about this coffee, however, is the warm feeling it brings. Every relaxing and smooth sip is reminiscent of a warm fireplace. If you want a bag of coffee to share when the family gets together, this is sure to please any palate that arrives.
Barista Note: We brewed the Christmas Blend in our percolator on a recent camping trip and it was such a great blend to brew in this method. The natural smokiness with its subtle sweet notes is heightened by the percolator and makes the cold mornings enjoyable.
Cheers,
Mrs. Brew
