Soul Doubt IPA - Freetail Brewing
“What is Third Coast IPA, you ask? It’s Texas terroir--grit, hard-scrabble farming, sacrifice and lean living. It’s bottom-dragging inner tubes on rain-thirsty rivers, driving endlessly across the desert to make the Chisos Mountains by dusk, and spring farm-to-markets adorned with Bluebonnets, Black-eyed Susans and Indian Paintbrush. Third Coast IPA is Texas contrariness in a can.”--FreetailBrewing.com
It doesn’t get more Texan than that!
Bitter West coast IPAs and hazy New England IPAs have been battling it out for a long time, but they have some real competition with the ‘Third-coast’ Soul Doubt IPA from Freetail Brewing out of San Antonio.
This beer is pale and hazy and has an aromatic punch that is redolent of a classic West Coast IPA. It comes in at a strong 6.8% ABV and 65 IBUs, but it is neither heavy nor oppressive. It has strong Cascade and Amarillo flavors that pair well with the maltiness of the pilsner, pale, and caramel malts that form a nice foundation for the beer.
This beer is hopforwad with pine, floral, and citrus flavors and aromas from late additions of Cascade and Amarillo hops. It’s great for the shade on a hot Texas day, and its complexity keeps it from getting boring as you drink.
This is a uniquely Texas beer that brings variety, rebellion, and ruggedness to an already dense market of IPAs. If you want to stand out, then create your own style of beer, just as Freetail has done with Soul Doubt, their ‘third-coast’ IPA.
If you’re ever in San Antonio, visit Freetail at one of their two taprooms. Along with staples like Soul Doubt, they also offer a wide variety of beers from stouts to blondes, sours to lagers.
Cheers!
