Highboy Space Case Double IPA - Independence Brewing Company

Fly me to the Moon! This one Highboy IPA is a real rocket, blasting off at 9.0% ABV and 100 IBUs. Brewed by Independence Brewing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing, this Double IPA is packed with Comet, Galaxy, and Apollo hops, and filled out with 2 Row, Crisp Pale, Crystal 45, and Flaked Barley (IndependenceBrewing.com).

I must admit, I was looking for a different beer when I found this one. But I don’t think I could be more satisfied with a somewhat accidental selection.

Space Case dropped out of the can like a stream of straw colored comets from the sky. It had a slight haze, and some pleasant but dense tropical, peach, and resinous citrus aromas. And after the first sip, I think the fruitiness was what surprised me the most. This beer was really balanced and fit into that perfect description of an Imperial/Double IPA. It had the noticeable alcohol content, the heavy malt bill to balance the resinous and bitter Apollo hops, and the really fruity first smell and finish of passionfruit, peach, and gentle citrus from the Galaxy and Comet hops.

This is probably the closest a beer will get me to being launched into space and plummeted back to Earth, but in a good way. It’s really complex, and it stayed on my mind for a few days after I drank it.

As a lover of the All-American Highboy pickup, I can really appreciate this beer that delves into the creative and fun sides of brewing and comes out with a product that isn’t just cool and reverent toward some great American feats but is also a great beer.

Check out Independence Brewing out of Austin, Texas. They have some great brews that I’ve grown to love. And, if you can get a hold of it, give any of the Highboy beers a chance, they are sippable, pleasant, and often commemorate something great.

Cheers!
