AlaMosaic IPA - Alamo Beer Co.

Most people outside of San Antonio see a city ingrained with Mexican heritage, full of hot summers, amazing tacos, and some of the best barbacoa north of the border—all of which it has in spades. But what some don’t know is how deep-rooted San Antonio is with German heritage.

Alamo Beer Company in Downtown San Antonio is an Independent Craft Certified Microbrewer that brings those German roots to life with a modern flare. In this article I will be reviewing Alamo Beer Company’s AlaMosaic IPA.

“This brew stands tall with a hoppy character and an attitude to match. Created to honor the fighting spirit of the Alamo and the rich cultural mosaic for which Texas stands.” –AlamoBeer.com.

Alamo Beer company uses Pilsner and Pale wheat malts, with Mosaic and Amarillo hops to bring this brew to life. Upon first cracking it open, I could smell the bittersweet grapefruit often associated with Amarillo hops. The color was golden and clear, a lot like a golden ale. The beer formed a beautiful head that maintained for the first few drinks.

The smell of grapefruit certainly followed up in the flavor, and I also got some bitterness (no kidding, 70 IBU is up there) that was followed up with earthy and citrus flavors from the mosaic hops. This IPA was really easy to drink compared to some IPAs and I think it had to do with the hint of berry on the tail-end from the mosaic hops.

I really enjoyed this beer, and if you like a bitter and aromatic IPA, I think you will like it too. Check out Alamo Beer Company online for events and a tap list. And if you find yourself in San Antonio, head just a few blocks from the River Walk for a diverse tap line and a German menu aimed to please any bargoer.
