À Tout Le Monde — Unibroue Brewery

Not all heavy metal beers have to be heavy. This is especially true when it represents one of the saddest ballad songs in metal. À Tout Le Monde was born in Quebec, Canada, after a friendship led to a collaboration between Megadeth’s iconic frontman Dave Mustaine and Unibroue’s Brewmaster Jerry Vietz.

This dry-hopped Belgian-style saison is on the lighter side at 4.5% ABV and 22 IBU, and is packed with tropical fruit and spice. It is capped with a silver foil and Vic Rattlehead stares back at you from the label with his ever shielded eyes.

To be honest, I did not know what to expect from this one. It has the air of a fancy beer with the French name, prominent brewery, and foil top, but it was created by a thrash metal icon who birthed bangers like ‘Symphony of Destruction’ and ‘Sweating Bullets.’ Almost contradictory, it seems. But, though I don’t know him personally, I do know that Dave Mustaine is one of the more complex and creative beings in the world, and I can only hope as much for his beer.

Here are our First Impressions:

  • On the eyes--Straw color with an orange tinge. It is slightly hazy, likely from the dry-hopping, and it forms a white and shiny head.

  • On the nose--Citrus and spice with gentle hop aroma. I also catch a hint of sour bite (maybe the astringency Unibroue describes), typical of many Saisons. Very tropical as well.

  • On the palate--Fruity! It has a very pleasing mango (and slight watermelon) flavor. I get just a hint of spice familiar to Belgian beers and sour bite along with it. I taste a bit of grapefruit on the back that I think is adding to the astringency (maybe Cascade hops? maybe Chinook?). It is very effervescent, light, and easy to drink. Certainly not what I was expecting, but that’s a good thing.

À Tout Le Monde translates into English as “To all the world” or “To everybody.” This beer is just that – something that most everyone who enjoys a good sessionable ale can find pleasure in. It is light, fruity, and has pop, bite, and character. Everything you could ask for from great artists. Its namesake song might leave you a little sad, but this beer will lift you up again.

Cheers!

Mr. Brew
