Chocolate Hazelnut - Death Wish Coffee Review
The sky’s brilliant blue has turned amber. Leaves fall from trees and crunch under foot. It’s official – Fall is in the air.
Most people turn to pumpkin spice (and everything nice) with the turn of seasons. Although we enjoy a trip down Pumpkin Avenue now and again, when we come across flavor profiles like Chocolate Hazelnut from Death Wish Coffee, we are eager to give it a try and see how it adds to the nostalgia of the season.
As soon as we open the bag, a dense wave of chocolate aroma wafts out. It is quickly followed by a subtler hazelnut aroma. We brewed this in our French press using 50 g of coffee grounds, 32 oz of 200-202℉ water, and a steep time of 3-4 minutes. We were more cautious at first of steeping it longer than four minutes because our previous experiences with Death Wish Coffee tells us that it is strong and packs a punch.
We were pleased to find the Chocolate Hazelnut much subtler than their other blends. It has a strong chocolate and hazelnut flavor. The chocolate adds a dry finish, complemented by what I found to be a delicious graham cracker flavor. The chocolate offers a more fudgy taste rather than a bitter cacao. The hazelnuts also add a creamy nuttiness that highlights the flavors of fall.
Chocolate Hazelnut is made with a blend of arabica and robusta beans which I believe makes a more well-rounded cup of coffee — especially in a medium-roast. Had Death Wish gone with a darker roast, the fudgy, nutty flavors of Chocolate and Hazelnut might have been overpowered and lost.
The only downside to this coffee purchase was that it came in 10 oz and was a tad expensive. It was gone quick in our house (which is a great sign, but I wanted it to last!). If you enjoy chocolate and hazelnut (or Hazelnut Mocha lattes at your favorite coffee shop) this is worth the money. The flavors are strong, well-balanced, and a perfect fall treat.
