Wit’s Peak - Athletic Brewing Co. Review

Sometimes the feeling strikes but the mood isn’t right, or you’re at work, or your kid’s baseball game, or you’re actually taking one of those sobriety pacts seriously. Whatever the situation may be, Athletic Brewing has your back when it comes to non-alcoholic beer.

Athletic makes beer in state-of-the-art breweries with modern techniques that keep your NA beer tasting like beer after they’ve removed the dizzy stuff. How they do it is magic, and their beers reflect that.

This week we’re trying their limited Belgian-style White: Wit’s Peak. Athletic describes this beer as “... a lively and luminous Belgian-style white with ingredients that pay homage to the Old World style. It’s built upon classic flavors of wheat and malt interwoven with exotic spices and citrus peel. Coriander and orange dance across the palate alongside a light, crisp herbal bitterness.” But my favorite description from Athletic is that Wit’s Peak is “curiously savory.”

Hell yes, let’s get after it.

First Impressions

  • On the Eyes--Straw-colored, hazy (from the wheat), and topped with a cream-colored head that diminished quickly.

  • On the Nose--Light citrus against an herbaceous backdrop. Gentle and enticing.

  • On the Palate--The aroma doesn’t lie or overestimate and the citrus comes through lightly in a zesty orange flavor followed by a bouquet of coriander and deep herb flavors that add that curiously savory component Athletic described, and it’s quite pleasant. The wheat makes a nice foundation for the orange and herb flavors to bounce off. Wit’s Peak is smooth and easy to drink with a light to medium mouthfeel.

Food Pairings: Athletic recommends pairing this Belgian-style white with sushi, brunch, and salad, though I doubt you’ll find something you don’t enjoy it with.

Final Thoughts

Wit’s Peak from Athletic Brewing is a great alternative (or first choice) when looking for a Belgian-style white but no alcohol. It is light, bright, and the citrus and herb flavors work great with the smooth wheat malt. The herb character and zesty orange provide a lot of depth and bring a lot of life to this beer, like fresh herbs and zest in a fine entree. It is a healthier option at 65 Calories and 15 carbs, and if you’re looking for a beer without the hard stuff, grab Wit’s Peak while you can or try any number of Athletic’s award-winning beers.

Cheers!
