Tripel Hop Citra — Duvel Review

Before starting this blog, we knew very little about Belgian beers or the tradition that accompanies them. But as their popularity has increased in America, it became time for us to learn more about these treasures. Of course, the best way to do that is to pop some tops and drown in suds. And this month of hoppy and heavy Belgian beers has been an eye opener into the deep love that goes into fantastic Belgian beers.

This week brings us another excellent beer! Duvel’s Tripel Hop Citra started with their original Duvel Belgian Ale (brewed with Saaz-saaz and Styrian Golding hops) and was transformed into a formidable Belgian IPA with the addition of American Citra hops. And just like its foundation beer, this one is strong – coming in at 9.5% ABV and 50 IBU! But one thing we’ve discovered drinking Belgian beers is that they have a sneaky way of making strong beers taste light and pleasant.

So, with the groundwork laid, let’s try this legend!

First Impressions:

  • On the Eyes--One thing I admire about Belgian beers is how they look, and this Belgian IPA is no different. Tiny, crisp bubbles float through the golden body to the thick cream-colored head. It looks so light and tingly, the mouth begins to water just looking at it.

  • On the Nose--The Citra aroma is apparent right from the pop of the top, but on closer inspection the subtler clove and spice and fruity flavors known in Belgian beers come through. I also get a ripe fruit characteristic that always reminds me a bit of bananas. The Belgian character blends so nicely with the rich citrus and floral of the high myrcene Citra.

  • On the Palate--The initial mouthfeel is quite creamy, more so than I expected, and then those tiny bubbles hit the tongue with a gentle bite fit for cutting through rich, fatty foods. The malt character is light (likely Pilsner and Munich malt), but sets a fantastic foundation for the wonderful citrus and floral notes of the Citra to sing. And this mixes so nicely with the spicy character from the Saaz and Styrian Golding hops as well as with the Belgian sweetness and yeast character. It finishes dry on the palate and preps the tongue for the next greedy swig.

Since 1871, Duvel has been creating some exceptional beers, and this Tripel Hop Citra is no different. It is an event to drink from the initial sweetness to the creamy and light mouthfeel and on through the spicy citrus finish. Duvel knows their craft, and they have even started offering a Tripel Hop Cashmere recently. One issue you may have with this beer is the price. It costs about $16+ for a four pack (ouch!). But, even if you have to put away four bucks a month for four months, consider trying this beer, especially if you’re interested in Belgian beers or Belgian IPAs. In my humble opinion, you won’t experience much better.

Cheers!
