Blueberry and Lemon Berliner Weisse

NOLA Brewing Co.

I found this purple beauty on a single can rack and had to give it a try. Blueberry and lemon is one of the varieties of Berliner Weisse that I have seen from NOLA Brewing this year (the other is Salted Watermelon) and I was eager to taste it as I continue to explore more varieties of Berliner Weisse and sour ales in general.

At first pour I was surprised to see how wonderfully purple this beer was, and with a nice haze often associated with wheat beers. Beyond its great color, it had a gentle head and the signature lactobacillus tickle to it.

The first sip surprised me. It had a nice dose of blueberries and it certainly has that lemony flavor that I have tasted in Berliner Weisse style beers, but it wasn’t as effervescent as some of the others I’ve tried. In my humble opinion, this beer leans more to the funky side of sours, and it is fairly smooth and easy to drink. I prefer the tart, sour beers over the more funky styles, but this beer is a nice in-between and would certainly be something I would recommend to someone who leans more toward the funk.

This is my first experience with NOLA Brewing Co., but after trying it and cruising their website I can’t wait to set aside some time to visit them in New Orleans. They have a great line-up of year-round beers and an interesting list of seasonal and tap beers, like a Azacca Cryo-Hopped IPA and a Blonde Ale with Crab Boil Seasoning (No kidding!).

If you haven’t heard of NOLA Brewing Co., check them out online (they have a great website) or check out their taproom “on a street tourists can’t pronounce,” in New Orleans. They also have a pizza shop that opened in 2020. With a combo like Blonde Ale with Crab Boil Seasoning and Pizza, NOLA Brewing sounds like my kind of place. If you haven’t been to New Orleans, go now, and visit NOLA Brewing Co. if you have a chance, I know I will next time I’m there.

Cheers,

Mr. Brew
